Day by day

Himalayan Signature Bhutan Luxury Tour 11 Days itinerary

11 days
  1. Your Bhutan luxury tour package begins from the time you reach the colorful capital city of Nepal. On arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport you will be greeted by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu. The airport is about 5 km away from the city center and usually takes about 25 minutes to reach, but longer during peak traffic hours.

Once you are settled at your hotel, the rest of the day is yours to relax after your flight. Kathmandu is a city with a long and layered history and even a short walk around your hotel will give you a glimpse of Nepal’s rich culture with prayer flags flapping over narrow lanes and the smell of incense drifting from nearby temples. This is where you want to start your journey if you want to go further into the Himalayas.

For those arriving early, optional short excursions can be arranged to nearby cultural sites such as Pashupatinath Temple or Boudhanath Stupa, both famous for their spiritual significance and architectural beauty. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner with authentic Nepali cuisine, the perfect start to your luxury Bhutan itinerary.

  2. Today you will fly from Kathmandu to Paro, one of the most spectacular flights in the world. The flight of about 1 hour covering some 400 kilometers provides spectacular views of the Himalayan range, including Everest, subject to weather conditions. The luxury tour package for Bhutan actually begins with the landing at Paro International Airport, surrounded by pine-forested hills.

Meet your private guide and driver in Paro and enjoy the scenic 50-kilometer drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city. The journey is about 1 to 1.5 hours along the Paro River through green valleys, quiet villages and hillsides strung with prayer flags. It’s a gentle introduction to the landscapes that define this luxury Bhutan itinerary.

In Thimphu you will visit the Tashichho Dzong, the fortress monastery that houses the throne room of the King of Bhutan and several government offices. Its whitewashed walls and golden roofs make it one of the most striking examples of Bhutanese architecture in the country. Next, stop by the Centenary Farmers Market, where vendors offer a glimpse of daily Bhutanese life, selling traditional products, handwoven fabrics and fresh vegetables.

Spend the evening exploring Thimphu on your own. Looking ahead to the next few days, you will have a satisfying dinner and a good night's sleep at your luxury hotel in Thimphu.

  3. Today you are going to explore the capital city of Bhutan with your professional tour guide and get a deeper look into the culture, history and craftsmanship of Thimphu. One of the most culturally rich days of your Bhutan luxury tour package.

Your journey begins at the Buddha Dordenma, a massive gilded bronze statue of Buddha Shakyamuni sitting at the top of a hill overlooking the Thimphu Valley. It is one of the biggest Buddha statues in the world, over 50 meters tall, and its base contains more than 100,000 smaller Buddha statues.

From here you will visit the Memorial Chorten built in 1974 in memory of the 3rd King of Bhutan Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. A whitewashed stupa and one of the city’s most prominent religious buildings, the Memorial Chorten is a popular gathering spot for locals who come here daily to walk clockwise around it while spinning prayer wheels.

Next you will visit the National Institute of Zorig Chusum, also known as the Painting School, where students are trained in Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts and crafts, including wood carving, embroidery and thangka painting. Watching the students at work gives you real insight into how these centuries-old skills are passed down through the generations.

To close the day, you will explore the Folk Heritage Museum, a restored traditional farmhouse that showcases rural Bhutanese life through household tools, farming equipment, and living spaces preserved much as they would have looked a century ago. It is a fitting way to understand daily life in Bhutan before continuing deeper into this luxurious Bhutan itinerary.

  4. Today you journey from Thimphu to the remote and pristine Phobjikha Valley, one of the most scenic stops on your Bhutan luxury tour package. The entire journey is around 135 kilometers and takes roughly 5 to 6 hours so it’s a day best enjoyed at a leisurely pace and with plenty of stopping along the way.

At about 30 km into the drive, you will reach Dochula Pass at an elevation of about 3,100 meters. This is one of the most photographed spots in Bhutan. There are 108 memorial chortens called the Druk Wangyal Chortens, built to honor the Bhutanese soldiers. On clear days you get sweeping views of the eastern Himalayas, including Gangkhar Puensum, the highest peak in the country. Here you will have time to walk amongst the chortens, take photos and have a warm cup of tea at the nearby café.

From Dochula the road descends into the lush Punakha Valley, climbs again toward Wangdue Phodrang and finally reaches Phobjikha Valley, a glacial valley known for its wide open meadows and rare wildlife. On arrival, you will visit Gangtey Monastery, a 17th-century seat of the Nyingma school of Buddhism perched on a hill overlooking the valley below. Its intricate murals and peaceful courtyard provide a fitting introduction to this quiet corner of the Himalayan luxury tour experience.

  5. One of the quieter and more picturesque stops on your luxury Bhutan tour package is the Phobjikha Valley and today is a more relaxed and absorbing day there. Your journey will begin at the Black-necked Crane Information Center, a small but informative center about the endangered black-necked cranes that migrate here each winter from the Tibetan plateau. There are displays on conservation efforts in the valley and large windows and telescopes that overlook the wetlands where the cranes feed and roost.

It is only a short walk from here to Khewang Lhakhang, a modest temple surrounded by farmhouses and grazing land, where you can get a glimpse of the spiritual and rural life of the valley. Continuing along, you will explore Gangtey Village, a cluster of traditional homes and small shops where locals still farm potatoes and buckwheat much as their ancestors did.

For those who would like to stretch their legs, there is an optional Gangtey Nature Trail, a gentle 4-kilometer hike that will take around 1.5 to 2 hours. The trail starts near Gangtey Monastery and then meanders through pine forests, dwarf bamboo groves and open meadows before descending to the valley floor. This is a flat, peaceful walk suitable for all fitness levels and one that takes in the unspoiled beauty that makes this part of your luxury Bhutan itinerary so special.

  6. Today you will leave the highlands of the Phobjikha Valley and descend toward Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan and one of the warmest and most fertile valleys in the country. The drive is 80 kilometers and takes about 3 hours. You return through Wangdue Phodrang before descending into the subtropical Punakha Valley, dotted with rice paddies and citrus orchards.

On the way you will have a stop at Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the Temple of the Divine Madman. This little hilltop temple was erected in the late 15th century to commemorate the eccentric saint Lama Drukpa Kuenley and is famous throughout Bhutan as a blessing place for fertility. The short walk to get there is through farmland and rice terraces, lending the visit a peaceful rural charm. This stop remains one of the most talked about aspects of any Bhutan luxury tour package, both for its history and its intriguing local legends.

Late afternoon arrival in Punakha. Check into your luxury hotel overlooking the dramatic mountain scenery of the Punakha Valley. The evening is free at leisure for you to relax, take a short walk through the valley or simply unwind and enjoy the views before the exploration of the next day.

  7. As part of your Bhutan luxury tour package, today is one of the most culturally rich days. You will be exploring the cultural heart of Punakha. Many people think Punakha Dzong is the most beautiful fortress in Bhutan, and that's where your trip starts. This dzong was built in 1637 at the spot where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers meet. It was the country's capital for many hundreds of years and is still where the central body of Bhutan's monks spend the winter.

The Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of the longest in the country at over 350 meters, zigzags across the Pho Chhu River just behind the dzong. The bridge is adorned with colorful prayer flags and has sweeping views of the valley. Connecting the dzong to nearby villages, the bridge is also a favorite photo stop on any luxury Bhutan itinerary.

From here you will drive for about 30 minutes to the village of Yebesa and then an easy uphill walk of about 45 minutes to 1 hour through rice paddies and pine forest to reach the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. The Queen Mother built this four-story chorten in the 1990s and it is full of detailed murals. From the rooftop you can see panoramic views of the Punakha Valley.

To round off the day, you’ll visit Talo Village, a peaceful hillside settlement of traditional farmhouses and a quiet monastery that gives a genuine view of rural life away from the main tourist trail.

  8. Today you will drive back to Paro following the scenic route through the Himalayan foothills. You will cross Dochula Pass again to have one last chance to enjoy the mountain views before your luxury tour of Bhutan moves to the cultural sites of Paro. It is about 125 km and takes 3.5 to 4 hours to cross Dochula Pass.

On arrival you will visit Paro Dzong (also called Rinpung Dzong), which is one of the best examples of Bhutanese architecture in the country. Built in the 17th century, it served as a backdrop for some of the scenes of the movie Little Buddha. It is a living monastery with religious and administrative functions.

Next you will visit the National Museum of Bhutan, housed in the round, watchtower-like Ta Dzong. The museum houses a large collection of thangka paintings, ancient weapons, textiles and religious artifacts that trace centuries of Bhutanese heritage, providing a valuable context to all you have seen so far on this luxury Bhutan itinerary.

In the afternoon, drive to Drukgyel Dzong, a historic fortress built in the 17th century to commemorate Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan invaders. It was partially destroyed by fire but on a clear day it offers spectacular views of Mount Jomolhari and remains one of the most atmospheric ruins in the country.

  9. The hike to Taktsang Monastery, or the Tiger’s Nest as it is better known, is what many travelers visit Bhutan for and this is today’s feature. Perched on a cliff face approximately 900 meters above the valley floor of Paro, this iconic monastery stands at an altitude of about 3,120 meters. The round-trip trail is about 6 kilometers and usually takes 4 to 5 hours, including a stop at the teahouse at the halfway point, where you can rest and enjoy the first clear sight of the monastery across the cliff.

The climb begins through a shaded forest of blue pine, with the option to ride a mule partway for those who prefer it. As you near the top, stone steps lead down into a small gorge and back up to the monastery gates, a final push that makes reaching this sacred site all the more rewarding. Considered one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Himalayan Buddhist world, Taktsang remains the single most photographed stop on this Bhutan luxury tour package.

After descending in the early afternoon, you will visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, believed to have been built in the 7th century. The ancient courtyard, ochre walls and tranquil gardens provide a peaceful contrast to the morning’s climb, completing your time in Paro on this luxury Bhutan itinerary.

  10. Today is the last day of your high-class tour of Bhutan. You will be taken from Paro to Kathmandu. You will fly over the same beautiful scenery in the Himalayas for about 400 km in just over an hour on your way back to Nepal. You'll have one last chance to enjoy the mountains before you go back to Nepal.

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport and proceed to your hotel in Kathmandu. The rest of the day is free for relaxation or shopping. From handwoven scarves to traditional prayer flags or a small memento to take home, this final evening is a quiet way to reflect on the journey through Bhutan’s valleys, monasteries and mountain passes that defined this luxury Bhutan itinerary.

  11. This is the last day of your Bhutan luxury tour package. You will check out from your hotel in Kathmandu and be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport to board your onward flight back home. Depending on your departure time, you may have some extra time in the morning to do a last round of walking around Kathmandu or do some last-minute shopping for souvenirs.

Your journey has ended, but the memory of a luxury Bhutan itinerary that took you through ancient dzongs, sacred monasteries and pristine valleys will stay with you—an experience that lingers with travelers long after they’ve returned home.

We hope this trip provided you with a true taste of the Land of the Thunder Dragon and we look forward to welcoming you on your next journey with Himalayan Signature.

Useful information

Flight Information: Kathmandu to Paro

The flight from Kathmandu to Paro is one of the most scenic in the world and is where your Bhutan luxury tour package truly begins. The journey covers approximately 400 km and takes about 55 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes, depending on the airline and weather conditions. On a clear day there are wide vistas of the Himalayan range, with occasional views of Mount Everest, and the flight is one of the highlights of the trip.

There are only two airlines that operate this route, both Bhutanese—Drukair and Bhutan Airlines—as foreign airlines are not allowed to fly into Paro. The landing at Paro International Airport is one of the more challenging in commercial aviation, with pilots flying through tight mountain valleys before touching down, adding a real sense of arrival to this luxury Bhutanese itinerary.

All visitors to Bhutan are required to obtain a confirmed visa clearance through a licensed tour operator prior to booking their flight. This will be facilitated for you as part of your Bhutan luxury vacation. Flights run on a limited weekly schedule, so it is recommended to book flights in advance, especially during the busy spring and fall travel periods. Once confirmed, your package will take care of all coordination of your flight details and airport pickup in Paro.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Bhutan Luxury Tour Package is Spring (March to May) or Fall (September to November). These two seasons are the clearest skies and the most pleasant weather, with daytime temperatures in the range of 15 C to 25 C. In spring the valleys are dotted with blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers, and in autumn the air is clear and the rice terraces in Punakha are a golden hue, with some of the best mountain views of the year. The best time to visit is October, when the weather is dry and the Himalayan peaks are clearly visible.

The seasons align with major festivals in Bhutan, such as the Thimphu Tshechu in autumn, adding a cultural layer to your luxury Bhutan itinerary. Winter (December to February) is a good time for people who like fewer people on the trails and don’t mind the cold, especially in the higher areas such as Phobjikha Valley. Summer (June-August) is monsoon season and the landscapes are lush and green, but the trails can get muddy. It’s not the ideal window for this trip. Spring and Autumn still offer the best overall experience for this luxury vacation in Bhutan.

Dining in the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon

Bhutanese food is bold, warming and very much connected to the land from which it comes. On this Bhutan luxury tour package, you will get to indulge in traditional Bhutanese fare, from ema datshi, the popular chili and cheese stew, to red rice grown in the terraced fields of Punakha. We use fresh local ingredients, often from local farms and markets, to bring a real sense of place to each dish.

And your luxury hotels in Bhutan add to it a touch of traditional flavors, elegant presentation and attentive service. We enjoy farm-to-table breakfasts and hearty Bhutanese dinners with the odd international dish for variety. Kathmandu also serves up equally memorable cuisine, with Nepali specialties served up in elegant hotel venues that set the tone for the luxury Bhutan itinerary to come. We prepare each meal with care so you can enjoy the ride while we worry about the details.

You will be staying in the heart of the capital in Thimphu. Where you stay in Punakha looks out over lush rice fields and the winding river below. Boutique lodges frame the quiet beauty of Phobjikha Valley in Gangtey. And in Paro, your last nights have panoramic mountain views close to Tiger’s Nest. Each property has been chosen not just for comfort but for the way it connects you to the landscape around it, making this Bhutan luxury vacation as memorable to sleep in as it is to explore.

Sightseeing Experience in Bhutan

There is no luxury tour package in Bhutan without its sightseeing and this journey provides some of the best in the Himalayas. From the dzongs of Thimphu and Punakha, which resemble fortresses, to the cliffside wonder of Tiger’s Nest, each stop has been selected to showcase Bhutan at its most authentic. You will walk through centuries-old monasteries, cross rivers on colorful suspension bridges, and stand at mountain passes flanked by prayer flags and snow-capped peaks. Every site has its own story, brought to life at every turn by the insight of your private guide who makes history, myth and local tradition come alive.

Beyond the monuments, this luxury Bhutan itinerary also offers quieter, more personal moments. You can wander through farmers' markets in Thimphu, hike along soft nature trails in Phobjikha Valley and visit small villages where life still goes on as it has for generations. These experiences were a real sense of the culture and people of Bhutan that balanced out the grandness of its landmarks. Whether you are intrigued by spiritual sites, sweeping landscapes or simple village life, this luxury vacation to Bhutan offers a full yet effortless sightseeing experience with every detail arranged for your comfort along the way.

Bhutan Visa and Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) Guide

A Bhutan visa is necessary for all international visitors to Bhutan and must be pre-approved, as a visa on arrival is not available. You need to apply through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator, who will sponsor you and do all the paperwork for you. The visa fee is US$40 per person, one time payment and it usually takes around 5 to 7 working days for approval once your trip is booked and your details are submitted. As part of your Bhutan luxury tour package, we handle this process so you don't have to deal with embassies or paperwork.

Aside from the visa, there's a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) charged by Bhutan, which is currently US$100 per person per night for most international visitors. This lower rate is valid until August 31, 2027, and applies to each night spent in the country. Bhutan’s “high value, low impact” approach to tourism means that the SDF directly contributes to funding the country’s health care, education and environmental conservation programs. Children aged 6 to 12 years old pay 50 percent of the fee, while children under 6 are completely free. The total cost of your luxury Bhutan itinerary includes the visa fee and the SDF, so once your trip is confirmed, these government charges are already covered and you don’t need to take any separate action.

Cultural Etiquette and Local Customs

  • When you go to dzongs, temples and monasteries, you should dress modestly (no bare shoulders or knees).

  • Leave your shoes and hats off when going into religious buildings.

  • Always walk clockwise around chortens, stupas, and prayer wheels.

  • Spin prayer wheels clockwise with your right hand.

  • Do not point your feet at Buddha statues, altars or monks when sitting.

  • Always ask permission before taking photos of monks, locals or religious ceremonies.

  • Do not touch people on the head, as it is considered sacred in Bhutanese culture.

  • Use both hands or your right hand when giving or receiving something.

  • Speak quietly and refrain from making any noise in religious or sacred places.

  • Do not show affection in public, as this is considered improper.

  • Bhutan has very strict tobacco regulations so don't smoke in public places.

  • Smile and give the locals a little nod; formal greetings are welcomed.

  • now the national dress code. The gho and kira are worn by many Bhutanese on a daily basis, particularly in government and religious spaces.

  • Follow your guide’s lead at religious sites—some inner sanctums are closed to tourists.

Currency, Payment, and Tipping Guide

Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) is the official currency of Bhutan. The Bhutanese Ngultrum is pegged to the Indian Rupee (INR) at 1:1. For this reason, Indian Rupees are accepted widely across the country. But some businesses won’t accept the larger notes, for fear of counterfeits. Most of the costs for your Bhutan luxury tour package will be prepaid, including accommodation, meals and transport. You will only need to carry cash for smaller expenses like tipping, souvenirs and personal purchases.

Upon arrival, you can exchange US Dollars or other major currencies for Ngultrum at Paro International Airport or at banks and authorized exchange counters in Thimphu and Paro. Luxury hotels and higher-end shops in the main cities will accept credit cards but elsewhere card acceptance is limited so it is wise to carry some cash for smaller towns and local markets.

Tipping is customary and appreciated in Bhutan but not compulsory. On a luxury Bhutan itinerary such as this, it is customary to tip your guide, driver and hotel staff at the end of your trip in appreciation of their service.

For this purpose, US Dollars are practical and small Ngultrum notes are good for casual tipping, such as at local restaurants or for porters. There is no standard tipping formula so it is at your discretion and can be a reflection of the level of service you received throughout your Bhutan luxury vacation. The cash buffer for tipping, planned before you arrive, makes this part of the trip simple and stress-free.
