Day by day

Himalayan Signature Lhasa EBC Experience itinerary

10 days
  1. Your Himalayan Signature Lhasa EBC Experience begins the moment you step off the plane at Lhasa Gonggar Airport, one of the world’s highest airports, at an altitude of some 3,570 meters. Our Tibetan guide will be waiting for you in the arrival hall with a traditional white khata and a warm welcome. From here you will drive about 60km (takes about 1-1.5 hours) through the scenic Lhasa Airport Expressway. The route follows the Yarlung Tsangpo River, giving you your first taste of the dramatic mountain scenery of Tibet.

Upon arrival in Lhasa, the spiritual capital of Tibet, you will be checked into your 5 star hotel and have time to rest. Today is kept deliberately light, as Lhasa is at a high altitude of over 3,600 meters. It helps your body start its acclimatization before the more active days ahead. This is the first step to a journey of tibetan culture, ancient monasteries and unforgettable views of the himalayas.

  2. Today is for the two most iconic sites of Lhasa, both part of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace. The first stop is the magnificent Potala Palace, the winter residence of the Dalai Lama and one of the world’s highest ancient palaces.

Climbing through its many halls and chapels gives a real sense of Tibet's royal and spiritual past. It is only a 15- to 20-minute drive, about 2 kilometers, from here to the sacred Jokhang Temple. This UNESCO heritage site, built in the 7th century, is regarded as the spiritual home of Tibetan Buddhism, where the venerable Jowo Shakyamuni statue is kept.

In the evening, you will step outside onto Barkhor Street, the busy pilgrim circuit around Jokhang Temple. This 1 km kora takes 20-30 minutes to walk, but most travelers take longer, browsing the local handicrafts, prayer wheels and thangka paintings. The day is a blend of Tibetan Buddhism, royal history and old-town charm rolled into one unforgettable experience.

  3. On your third day, you will visit two of Tibet's 'Great Three' Gelugpa monasteries, both of which provide a more in-depth insight into Tibetan Buddhism. You start at the Drepung Monastery, about 8 kilometers west of downtown Lhasa, a 20- to 30-minute drive. Established in 1416, it was once the largest monastery in the world, housing thousands of monks. Its whitewashed halls, including Ganden Palace and Coqen Hall, are a must-visit for any interested in Tibetan monastic history. After lunch, you will drive to Sera Monastery, which is about 11 km away from the city and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to drive.

Sera is known for its lively monk debates that take place every day in the afternoon debate courtyard. One of the most memorable cultural experiences in Lhasa is to watch the monks embroiled in heated debates, using sharp hand gestures to test their understanding of Buddhist philosophy. Both monasteries also have peaceful kora (circumambulation) paths around their grounds, so you can take the time to slow down and enjoy the mountain views. Few places capture the living spirit of Tibetan Buddhist culture as well as this day.

  4. Today you will begin your scenic overland journey out of Lhasa, covering approximately 260 km in total. The drive goes along the Kyi Chu River before climbing to Kampala Pass, which is above 4,700 meters. Here you get your first spectacular glimpse of the Yamdrok Lake, one of the three sacred lakes of Tibet, famous for its stunning turquoise color. This holy lake is about 120 km from Lhasa and it takes around 2.5-3 hours to reach there. Further on you will pass dramatic mountain scenery, crossing the Karola Pass, before arriving at the stunning Karola Glacier.

This glacier, a little over 5,000 meters, is one of the most accessible ice fields in Tibet and can be seen directly from the roadside. A short drive of 70 kilometers from the glacier takes you to Gyantse, a historic Tibetan town with an old fort and traditional architecture (1-2 hours). It is a full-day drive (7 - 8 hours with stops) and is therefore one of the most visually rewarding days of the trip. This route is a perfect mix of the essence of Tibet overland travel, combining sacred lakes, glaciers and mountain passes into one unforgettable day.

  5. You will start your day in Gyantse, exploring the impressive Pelkor Chode Monastery; a rare site where the Sakya, Gelug and Kadam schools of Tibetan Buddhism coexist within the same complex. Next door is the famous Gyantse Kumbum, a nine-story stupa often called the "hundred thousand images" for its numerous chapels filled with murals and statues. This massive structure is one of the most distinctive examples of Tibetan Buddhist architecture you will see on the trip. From Gyantse you will drive to Shigatse (the second largest city in Tibet), about 90 kilometers away and it takes about 2 hours.

The road winds through fertile valleys and small farming villages, giving glimpses of everyday Tibetan life. In Shigatse you will visit the impressive Tashilhunpo Monastery, founded in 1447, which is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama. It has a giant gilt statue of the Buddha and a bustling community of monks and is one of the largest active monasteries in Tibet. A stroll through its golden-roofed halls is a quiet end to a day of Tibetan monastic heritage.

  6. You'll drive deep into the Everest region today, covering some 330 kilometers from Shigatse to Rongbuk, which takes about 7 hours. The route is via the historic Friendship Highway, through Tingri town and over the scenic Gawula Pass. On a clear day, this pass offers panoramic views of five of the world’s highest peaks, including Mount Everest itself. The road winds through high mountain valleys. Continuing, you will reach Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world at almost 5,000 meters.

This Nyingma monastery was built in 1902 and is located only a few kilometers from Everest Base Camp and offers one of the most iconic views of the north face of Everest. There will be time to explore the prayer halls and meditation caves, to soak up the quiet spirituality of this remote sacred site. Staying near Rongbuk also gives you a chance to see a glorious sunrise over Everest the next morning, with prayer flags rippling against the mountains. Today is a combination of one of the most rewarding stops on your Everest Base Camp trek and long-distance travel.

  7. Get up early to enjoy one of the most memorable mornings of your trip. The drive from Rongbuk Monastery to Everest Base Camp is a short one, only about 8 kilometers, and is the closest point most travelers can get to the world’s tallest mountain without technical climbing gear. From roughly 17,000 feet, this location offers a detailed view of Everest’s north face, especially striking in the gentle morning light. Many travelers come here to catch sunrise over Everest, when the peak glows gold before the crowds roll in.

After enjoying the views and taking some photos at this bucket list spot, you will begin the return journey to Shigatse, retracing the scenic route through Tingri and back across the Gawula Pass. It’s a long day on the road, but it’s a good day and it’s a rewarding day, covering close to 330 kilometers and taking 7 hours. In the evening, you will return to Shigatse and have time to relax after this high-altitude adventure. The emotional high point of any Tibet EBC tour is often reaching Everest Base Camp, and this day delivers exactly that.

  8. Today we return to Lhasa after an unforgettable morning at the foot of Everest. The road follows the north Friendship Highway, a distance of about 280 kilometers. The journey usually takes about 5 to 6 hours on smooth, well-maintained roads. This route is a different view of the high plateau of Tibet, passing alongside the valley of the Yarlung Tsangpo River with wide-open landscapes and distant mountain views. The drive is easier and more relaxed than your outbound journey, as you are already acclimatized from earlier days.

You may stop and rest along the way and enjoy the changing scenery and reflect on the incredible sights of Rongbuk Monastery and Everest you have seen. Returning to Lhasa, you will have completed a full circle through some of Tibet’s most iconic destinations, from sacred monasteries to the foot of the world’s highest peak. The check-in to your 5 star hotel in the evening allows you to relax before the last days of your Tibet luxury tour.

  9. Your last full day takes you into the Yarlung Valley, sometimes called the cradle of Tibetan civilization. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to drive 170 to 180 kilometers from Lhasa to Tsedang, the capital of Shannan Prefecture. The road follows the Yarlung Tsangpo River, passing through fertile farmland and small traditional villages that contrast with the high plateau scenery of the early days. In Tsedang you can see sites connected with Tibet’s earliest kings, such as the historic Yumbulakang Palace, reputedly the first building ever constructed in Tibet.

If you fancy stretching your legs further, there is an optional visit to Samye Monastery. Samye, built in the 8th century, is 170 km from Lhasa and is Tibet's first monastery. The monastery is nothing like the other monastery on this trip, with its individual circular layout representing a Buddhist mandala. Whether you opt for the standard Yarlung Valley exploration or include the Samye Monastery extension, this day offers an important perspective on the origins of Tibetan history and culture as your journey comes to an end.

  10. Today, your Himalayan Signature Lhasa EBC Experience comes to an end and you make preparations to depart from Lhasa. Transfer to Lhasa Gonggar Airport (about 60 kilometers from the city center) according to your flight or train schedule. It is about a 1 to 1.5 hour drive along the scenic Lhasa Airport Expressway with your last glimpse of the Yarlung Tsangpo River and Tibet's dramatic mountain landscape.

After your trek through Tibet, our Tibetan guide will take you to the airport to ensure a smooth and relaxed goodbye. And when you depart, you carry away memories of ancient monasteries, sacred lakes and the incredible experience of being at Everest Base Camp. This is the end of a luxury Tibet tour that was unlike any other, a tour that combined spiritual heritage with high-altitude adventure like few tours could.

Useful information

Best Time to Visit Lhasa and Everest Base Camp

Spring (April to June) or Fall (September to October) is the best time for this tour to go to Tibet. During these months, the weather is stable in Lhasa and the area around Everest Base Camp. In Lhasa, daytime temperatures are pleasant, frequently between 10°C and 20°C, which is perfect for sightseeing and monastery visits. Temperatures still drop at higher altitudes near EBC in these favorable months, so you’ll still need to layer up in warm clothing.

Spring is another popular season because of the clear mountain views. Low humidity and calm winds make it easier to see Mount Everest without cloud cover. Fall also has dry weather and fewer crowds than summer’s peak season. Traveling during these windows also means better road conditions on the long overland drives to Shigatse and Rongbuk. Avoid monsoon season (July and August), as the afternoon rain can affect visibility and comfort while traveling on mountain routes.

Food & Dining Experience

All your meals are included on this Tibet luxury tour so you can enjoy a true taste of Tibetan cuisine without having to plan anything. Expect hearty, warming dishes to suit the high-altitude climate, such as thukpa, a noodle soup full of vegetables and meat, and momos, Tibet's popular steamed dumplings stuffed with yak meat or vegetables. You’ll also find another traditional staple called Tsampa, a roasted barley flour mixed with butter tea to make a filling, energy-dense meal for the altitude.

The first sip might taste a bit strange, but yak butter and salt are local staples, and you should try butter tea at least once during your stay. Hotels’ restaurants in places like Lhasa and Shigatse also provide international options, including Chinese and Western food, so when you feel like it, you can combine local flavors with familiar comfort food. The further you go from the tourist hubs, the more basic the food becomes—think warming and nourishing rather than varied.

Vegetarian food is generally easy to find throughout the trip, as many Tibetan dishes are based around vegetables, cheese and grains as well as meat. Your guide can also help to showcase regional specialties and explain the ingredients used, adding a cultural dimension to each meal. Meals are also planned to aid hydration and energy levels, which makes for easier acclimatization as you venture deeper into the Himalayas, as the trip involves several days at elevation.

Accommodation

On this package you will stay in 5 star hotels throughout the trip, carefully selected for comfort and high-altitude destinations. In Lhasa you will stay in a top luxury hotel with modern amenities, such as heating, private bathrooms and often stunning views of the Potala Palace or surrounding mountains, as well as traditional Tibetan design touches such as carved furniture and thangka-inspired décor.

The journey continues to Gyantse and Shigatse, where accommodation is still comfortable, usually with well-appointed rooms and modern facilities, though the overall style is more understated than Lhasa’s premium properties. As you get closer to Everest Base Camp, the accommodation becomes more basic, as you’d expect in this remote high-altitude area. Basic but clean rooms are available in guesthouses near Rongbuk Monastery, often with electric blankets to combat the cold nights, as infrastructure at this height cannot match city standards.

That said, all the accommodations on the trip are purposefully chosen with a focus on warmth, cleanliness and proximity to main attractions so you spend less time traveling and more time enjoying each place. The combination of luxurious hotels in big cities and cozy, practical accommodation near Everest ensures a complete experience for your Himalayan Signature Lhasa EBC Experience without compromising rest or safety at any point of the journey.

Tibet Travel Permit and Visa Requirements

For Tibet, you need more than just a Chinese visa. Foreign visitors also require a Tibet Travel Permit, which can only be obtained through a registered travel agency, not independently. This permit is fully handled as part of your Himalayan Signature Lhasa EBC Experience, so you can focus on planning the trip rather than the paperwork.

  • A China visa is required before applying for the Tibet Travel Permit.

  • Tibet Travel Permit arranged only through a licensed travel agency

  • Permit processing usually takes around 15 to 20 days.

  • Additional permits needed for areas like Everest Base Camp

  • Passport copies required in advance for permit applications

  • Independent travel without a guide is not allowed in Tibet.

  • Permit and guide requirements are included in this package

Altitude Sickness: Prevention and What to Expect

A large part of this journey is over 3,600 meters in elevation, so knowing about altitude sickness is an important part of your preparation for the trip. In Lhasa symptoms can appear on the first day and usually disappear as your body acclimatizes. The itinerary has been designed to allow for gradual acclimatization and to ensure your safety, we will be carrying a high-altitude medical kit on all treks.

Symptoms

  • Headache and mild dizziness

  • Fatigue or unusual tiredness

  • Shortness of breath during light activity

  • Nausea or loss of appetite

  • Difficulty sleeping the first night or two

Prevention

  • Rest on your first day in Lhasa before sightseeing.

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the trip.

  • Avoid alcohol and heavy exertion early on.

  • Eat light, energy-rich meals.

  • Move slowly and pace yourself at higher elevations.

What to Expect

  • Mild symptoms are common and usually temporary.

  • Symptoms often improve within 24 to 48 hours.

  • Guides are trained to monitor your condition throughout.

  • A high-altitude medical kit is available if needed.

  • Severe symptoms are rare but should be reported to your guide immediately

Currency, Cash, and Payment Tips in Tibet

If you want to travel easily in Tibet, especially once you get out of the big cities, you should know about the money and ways to pay. The Chinese Yuan (CNY) is the official currency and the only one accepted in the region.

Most hotels and bigger shops in Lhasa accept credit cards and mobile payment is common but often requires a Chinese bank account to use. As you travel further into remote areas such as Shigatse, Rongbuk and Everest Base Camp, cash is a necessity as card payments and digital wallets are rarely accepted outside of city centers. ATMs become scarce outside the main towns, so it is best to withdraw/exchange sufficient cash while you are still in Lhasa.

Smaller denomination notes are useful at the local market, tea house, or for informal purchases along the way. Making plans ahead of time for the money you will need will help your luxury Tibet tour go smoothly and without any problems.

Internet, Connectivity, and Communication in Tibet

You should plan to stay connected on your trip as internet and mobile connectivity in Tibet can be patchy, especially away from the main cities. Most 5 star hotels in Lhasa have good Wi-Fi, so it’s easy to keep connected or upload photos from your trip.

As you travel to Gyantse, Shigatse and remote areas such as Rongbuk and Everest Base Camp, internet access will be slower and less reliable, and some areas may have no signal at all. International SIM cards usually don’t work without a local plan, but you can buy local Chinese SIM cards for mobile data. Many international websites, such as social media apps and search engines, are blocked in Tibet, so it’s a wise idea to have a VPN on hand before you go if that’s something you’ll need to do.

It’s a sensible idea to let your family or friends know in advance about the limited connectivity so you can manage their expectations during the more remote sections of your Tibet luxury tour. Your guide will carry communication devices in case of emergencies so you will be safe even in areas of low or no signal.

Physical Fitness Requirements for This Package

The Himalayan Signature Lhasa EBC Experience is a mainly vehicle-based trip that is comfortable but does involve high-altitude travel and some walking at elevation. A moderate level of fitness is recommended for this trip, especially for visiting the monasteries and trekking to Everest Base Camp.

  • Most of the trips are in a private SUV, and the physical effort required is not great.

  • Walking is required at monasteries, temples and viewpoints.

  • Choose comfortable shoes if the ground is uneven or sloped.

  • No technical trekking or climbing skills are required.

  • A good level of fitness helps you acclimate to high altitude.

  • If you have any existing health conditions, see a doctor before you book.

  • Most adults who are in excellent health should be able to participate.

Cultural Etiquette and Monastery Visit Guidelines

A significant part of this journey is visiting Tibet’s sacred sites and understanding local cultural etiquette helps you show respect when visiting places like the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and the region’s many monasteries. Tibetan Buddhist customs are woven into daily life, and a few simple practices can help honor those traditions.

  • Dress modestly to visit monasteries—shoulders and knees covered.

  • Walk clockwise around temples, stupas and prayer wheels.

  • Take off hats and pray quietly in prayer halls.

  • Ask for permission before taking pictures of monks or local pilgrims.

  • Never direct your feet at Buddha statues or religious objects.

  • Don’t touch murals, statues, or religious objects.

  • Follow your guide’s lead in any rituals or monastic practices.
